Just like most things, your hot tub also needs proper maintenance to ensure it is working when you are looking to relax in those hot, bubbling jets. Balancing the water chemistry and keeping it clean is just a small part of your spa maintenance, but that doesn’t mean it’s too difficult or time-consuming. Share on X In fact, there are thing lying around your home that are perfect solutions to maintaining your hot tub!

Top Spa Maintenance Tricks

No matter what kind of hot tub you have, you cannot neglect to maintain it. Here are seven top spa maintenance tips that can help save you time, money, and frustration and make your hot tub always ready for use!

  1. Tennis Balls
  2. Panty Hose
  3. Simple Bleach Solution
  4. Enzymes
  5. Garden Hose Filter
  6. Baking Soda
  7. White Vinegar

1) Tennis Balls

Grab a couple of those fuzzy, yellow balls and throw them into your hot tub water or the spa skimmers. These fuzzy floating balls soak up grime and dirt floating in your spa into their fibers, leaving it looking clean and healthy. Change the tennis balls out frequently–especially if you use your hot tub often.

2) Panty Hose

Changing your hot tub water frequently is part of your needed maintenance. An easy way to help prevent recirculating dirt and debris into the filter system is to cover the lower return inlets with pantyhose while you change the water. Keeping the debris and gunk out of your filter reduces stress on the system and helps keep the water chemistry balanced, too.

3) Simple Bleach Solution

If you have a hot tub, it is safe to assume you have a hot tub cover, as well. This cover also needs to be maintained or they can develop a musty, mildew smell or eventually grow mold. An easy way to keep your cover clean is to regularly use a simple bleach solution. Just put nine parts water and one part bleach into a spray bottle and use it to clean the underside of your cover every month or so.

4) Enzymes

You may not know it, but enzymes can flourish in many different places–including your hot tub. Enzymes are produced from fatty lipids and body oils breaking down. For this fix, you will need to go to your local hot tub professional and pick up a bottle of special enzyme products to break down organic compounds in your spa. Buying an enzyme product will help keep your hot tub and filter cleaner and also keep your spa free of that horrocious scum line.

5) Garden Hose Filter

Clean water equals a clean hot tub. A great trick to keeping your water in peak condition is to use a water hose filter when refilling your spa. If you don’t have a water hose filter, you can also place the hose inside your spa filter so incoming water can still be cleaned.

6) Baking Soda

Not all hot tubs have tile, but if yours does, you need to keep that grout clean to keep your spa looking great! An easy way to keep it clean? Good, old-fashioned baking soda. Make a paste with some water and baking soda and apply the paste to your tiles and grout with a sponge. After five minutes, turn the hot tub on, grab an old toothbrush, and attack those grout lines in a circular motion.

7) White Vinegar

If you have hard water in your home, you might end up with calcium accumulating in your jets, causing them to clog, stiffen, or stop working altogether. To combat build-up in your hot tub, use white vinegar to clean your spa jets and valves. Make sure to check and rebalance your hot tub chemistry since the acids in the vinegar can cause your pH to become imbalanced.
